Carpinteria Christmas Bird Count sign-ups are happening now

November 14, 2021 by John Callender

Ring-billed Gull on Carpinteria State Beach, November 1, 2021

After deciding to cancel last year’s Christmas Bird Count due to COVID-19, I’m very excited to be going forward with this year’s count. This year the Carpinteria CBC will happen, and it will happen on Saturday, December 18, 2021.

If you were signed up for last year’s count, you should already have received an email from me inviting you to participate in the 2021 count, and offering to assign you to the same location you were assigned to last year. It’s also fine if you want to be assigned somewhere different, or if you weren’t signed up for last year’s count but want to do this year’s.

For everyone who wants to participate in this year’s count, the first and most important step is to submit the sign-up form here:

2021 Carpinteria CBC Sign-up Form

Because the Ventura CBC has scheduled their count for the same day as ours, a number of Ventura birders who normally do our count will not be able to participate this year. So there are some important territories that need coverage.

More information about the count is on the Carpinteria CBC web page. We’re going to have a great count this year!

I have participated in the Carp CBC for many years by sending count lists and photos to different participants who have contacted me. I keep a list and take as many photos as I can. If you would like either, I’d be glad to send them to you.

This year almost all of the usual visitors to Rancho Mesa Escondida showed up, with the exception of a Hermit Thrush. We did have a first in that a Black-throated Gray Warbler has been hanging around for the past 2 weeks. I was able to get some clear photos of “it” today.

We did have another first for us here a month ago, a White-throated sparrow. I have pictures of that as well, though it didn’t appear today.

Let me know if you’d like me to send you a list or any photos.

    All the best,

    Mark Ferrer

      Yes, yes, and yes. 🙂

I’ll contact you via email. Thanks!
