I’m excited to be joining Jenny Slaughter and Craig Murray for a scouting trip to Jameson Lake this coming Saturday. Thanks to dam caretaker Alan Prichard for making that possible. I can’t wait to see what’s out there. It’s been a pretty dry year so far, which means freshwater wetland habitat is hard to find in our circle. Our hopes for good waterfowl numbers may depend on what the Jameson Lake team can find on count day.

Scouting Report
Some excellent birds have been showing up in our circle over the last few days:
- The female/immature-type Baltimore Oriole in the Shemara Street bottlebrush trees has been seen by a number of birders over the past few days. Spencer Seale got a particularly nice photo yesterday. (eBird list)
- Barbara DeGroot found a Lewis’s Woodpecker along the west edge of the Montecito Valley Club back on November 14, and let us know in a comment on this post that the bird was still there as of November 29. I went there this morning and found the bird right where she said it would be, in the trees along the east side of Valley Club Road. (eBird list)
- Daniel Tinoco found a Hermit Warbler (which we’ve only had once before on our count) in Seaside Gardens on November 29. I wrote to him after I saw his report in eBird, and he responded with these details: “I saw the Hermit Warbler, a female, in the Australian garden. It was initially on some low branches and then went up into some tall trees nearby where it stayed high up. It was quite active and calling frequently.” (eBird list)
