We will not have the regular Carpinteria Birdwatchers meeting or outing this month. Instead, we’ll be focused on the upcoming Christmas Bird Count!
Pre-CBC Scouting
Most of you should have been assigned to your area for count day by now. A handful of you have not been assigned yet, but we plan to get to you in the next few days. All of you can help us prepare by birding your assigned area, or anywhere else in the count circle, between now and count day:
- Submit your scouting checklists in eBird, and share them with the ‘carpcbc’ eBird account
- Update the shared tally spreadsheet with your scouting observations, especially to record locations for uncommon species
Count Week Birding (Dec 17-23)
Species seen during count week but missed on count day can still be included in our “count week” tally. From December 17 on it’s especially important to get out and see what you can find. Again, you can report your birds by submitting in eBird and sharing the checklist with the ‘carpcbc’ eBird user.
CBC Tune-up Meeting (Thursday, Dec 18)
Thursday, December 18 at 6:30pm (Zoom only)
Two days before the count we’ll have a Zoom meeting to review count procedures, discuss area assignments, and answer any questions before the big day. This meeting is totally optional, but should be a lot of fun.
You will receive the Zoom link for the meeting at the email you gave when you signed up for the count.
CBC Count Day — Saturday, December 20
- Morning birding — Bird your assigned area, reporting your sightings via eBird. See Participant Instructions for details.
- Midday tally — Meet us in-person at the library or online via Zoom at 12:30 p.m. to share what we’ve seen and plan afternoon birding for those who choose to keep going. See Participant Instructions for details.
- Afternoon birding — Find those missing species!
- Evening compilation meeting — 6:30 p.m., Zoom only. Participation is optional, but encouraged. See Participant Instructions for details.
Post-CBC Count Week
Continue birding through December 23 to help capture any species we missed on count day. Report via eBird checklist shared with the ‘carpcbc’ eBird user.
